Visit the labyrinth caves of the Buda Castle

In the beautiful Buda neighborhood of the Hungarian capital and very close to the Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion, we find a very curious and mysterious place that will captivate you if you visit it.

It is one of the places that we liked the most on our trip to Budapest. This is the Labyrinth of the Buda Castle (which is not in the Castle itself).

It is 1,200 meters long that can be visited, with caves, corridors, springs and a lot of mystery.

The Story of the Labyrinth of the Buda Castle

Budapest - Buda Castle LabyrinthThis dark underground labyrinth has been formed over the centuries thanks to the erosion caused by the natural currents of thermal waters of Budapest.

Since prehistory it has been used by man as a refuge and in the Middle Ages it was artificially enlarged, completing the natural spaces.

During its history it has served as a jail or as a safe.

And during World War II it was used as a bunker, an operations center and even a hospital. And in 1980 it was refurbished so that visitors to Budapest can enjoy it.

To enter you must first go down some steep stairs (be very careful not to trip) until you reach the ticket offices, where the visit will begin.

The temperature inside the Buda Castle Labyrinth is not very high, which can be a great contrast to the outside, depending on whether you visit it in summer or winter.

Inside you will walk through the passageways and we recommend you to know all the corners. In some places there are some wax sculptures, many very scary.

There are also fountains, columns and even cave paintings and there is an area where an artificial mist has been created that will surprise you.

The tour of the Labyrinth can be done in a very special way from 6:00 p.m. when it is traveled with the lights completely off and with oil lamps.

You can find more information on the official website of the Buda Castle Labyrinth.
