St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest

St. Stephen ‘s Basilica is considered the Budapest Cathedral and is the largest religious building in Hungary. It is so big that there can be up to 8,500 people inside.

It is possible to climb the towers to have some very interesting views of the city and the best views of the basilica are from the top of the Buda hill.

The surrounding streets are also very interesting with many shops and restaurants.

The Construction of St. Stephen’s Basilica

The construction of this spectacular religious building began in 1851 and was not inaugurated until 1905 after more than 50 years of work.

The works suffered some setbacks, such as the collapse of its dome in 1868.

Saint Stephen ‘s Basilica is dedicated to the first King of Hungary, Stephen I, who lived in the 10th century and inside which is his right arm, an important relic in Hungary.

Its dimensions are truly spectacular and its height is exactly the same as that of the Parliament in Budapest, 96 meters.

What to see in St. Stephen’s Basilica

The main façade of the Basilica of Saint Stephen is truly spectacular. It is 55 meters wide and there are two towers on both sides, making it possible to access the top of the right tower where the heaviest bell in Hungary is also found.

From there, where you can access it via 364 steps or by elevator, you have an incredible 360-degree panoramic view. The best views of the façade are from the square in front and the street that leads to the banks of the Danube lined with restaurants.

Its interior is equally amazing. It has a Greek plan and is neoclassical in style and its dimensions speak for themselves.

We can find numerous works of art inside and among the most notable places are the sacristy and the Holy Chapel.

The pulpit or the organ are also important elements to admire along with the paintings and mosaics.
