The most remarkable thing about Cáceres is the Old Town, a corner that will take you back to another era, perfectly preserved and wonderful. Here we tell you what to visit in Cáceres in a weekend.

What to see in Cáceres in two days

First day in Caceres

The first day in Cáceres coincides with the one we offer you in our article on Cáceres in one day. If you want to have more ideas to visit Cáceres in this article you can expand them.

Caceres - Main SquareThe beginning of our tour of Cáceres may be in the Plaza Mayor, the best known image of the city and the heart of the Monumental City. It stands out for its 16th century arcades and the large number of shops and restaurants. At one of its ends we highlight the Town Hall.

The Bujaco Tower is another outstanding monument, as are the Ermita de la Paz and the Arco de la Estrella, the gateway to the Monumental City, and therefore our next destination.

After entering the oldest part of Cáceres, we quickly arrive at the Church of Santa María, the Co-Cathedral, and the main church of a city full of alleys that have served as film sets and have experienced very important moments in history.

Caceres - San Francisco Javier ChurchNext to the Church of Santa María you should not miss the statue of San Pedro de Alcántara and its interior, its chapels and its altarpiece. Opposite is the Episcopal Palace and other stately homes that form an excellent ensemble with the Gothic portals and the Renaissance tower of the co-cathedral.

Walking through the streets we arrive at another of the great squares of Cáceres, the Plaza de San Jorge, where the Church of San Francisco, from the 18th century and in baroque style, is located. It stands out for its square towers with pyramidal tops. In front of it you can admire the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, famous for its two towers, one higher than the other.

The walk continues along the street to the right of the Church of San Jorge, between houses and palaces, until it reaches the Church of San Mateo, a mixture of Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Plateresque styles. You should not miss its facade or its interior. The square, also called San Mateo, is completed with the Convent of San Pablo. Just behind, the Casa de las Veletas where the Museum of Cáceres is located.

Cáceres - Grass TowerWe follow the path along the stairs that are next to the Casa de las Veletas to stroll along the murlla and arrive at the Parador de Cáceres, located in the Palacio del Comendador de Alcuéscar, of which we must highlight its tower and its façade as well as the impressive Renaissance courtyard inside.

In this way we finish the tour of the Monumental City but we still have a lot to see in Cáceres in two days, for example, the Barrio de Santiago.

This neighborhood is located to the north of the Plaza Mayor and in it we can admire monuments such as the Francisco de Godoy Palace or the Church of Santiago, located in the square of the same name. The New Jewish Quarter is also located in this area.

The day can end by touring the commercial Calle Pintores, which starts from the Plaza Mayor and even go back to the Monumental City at night to see it illuminated, one of the best things to visit in Cáceres in two days.

What to see the second day in Cáceres. A field trip

Plasencia - CathedralThe city of Cáceres is small and everything is very close, so in the previous day’s visit you will have known the most interesting points to see in Cáceres in a weekend. So this second day you can dedicate it to making an excursion to a nearby place.

Due to its magnificent location within Extremadura, in a very short time you can reach one of the other large Extremaduran cities such as Plasencia, Mérida or Trujillo. Any of them will surprise you and you can visit it in a single day. Badajoz is another good option.
