It has linguistic loans from the Taíno language, an indigenous language of the island that is now extinct, especially for lexicon on vegetation, nature and native musical instruments.
It also features loanwords from West African languages, especially of food, music, and dance. In addition, it has recent influences from English, due to the close ties with the United States. Its pronunciation is largely due to Canarian Spanish.
The English language
English (English) is spoken by 55.9 % of Puerto Ricans (of which only 8% are native, about 159,000 inhabitants). As with English to Spanish, there are also Spanish influences in English, especially in the accent. It was introduced to the island after 1898, when the United States seized it.
